Here's a list of the most frequently asked questions. Please call us if you have any other questions.

What are the Most Common Refractive Problems

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia)
Results when the eye is too long or the cornea is too steep leading to light rays focusing in front of the retina leading to blurred vision. Myopes can see objects at near but have difficulty seeing distant objects.
    .
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
Results when the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat leading to light rays focusing behind the retina. Hyperopes can see objects that are far away better than objects that are up close.
    .
  • Astigmatism
Results when the eye is oblong (similar to a football) leading to light rays focusing on two or more points.
    .
  • Presbyopia (not treated with laser vision correction at this time)
Aging change seen in patients over 40-45 years of age who have difficulty with reading vision. Related to the natural lens losing its ability to change focus from distance to near.

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser Vision Correction uses an excimer laser to correct nearsightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. The laser emits cool pulses of ultraviolet light which precisely and smoothly reshape the cornea allowing the light rays to properly focus on the retina. This results in clear and improved vision. The amount of tissue removed is thinner than a human hair therefore the strength and integrity of the cornea are maintained. Since the laser light does not penetrate the eye, the rest of the eye structures (iris, lens, retina) are not affected.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a form of laser vision correction where a microkeratome is used to create a thin flap in the cornea exposing the stromal bed where the laser is delivered. Following the laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned. The active pump in the cornea helps to keep the flap in position; therefore, no stitches are needed.

What is Custom (Wavefront) Refractive Surgery?

Custom or Wavefront technology uses a special analyzer to produce a detailed map of light rays as they travel through the eye creating a map of the optical system similar to a “fingerprint”. This is much more precise than standard measurements and can be directly programmed into the excimer laser customizing the surgery for each eye’s unique vision correction needs. Benefits include: higher likelihood of achieving better quality vision, lesser likelihood of having night vision difficulties i.e. glare, haloes, starbursts, and potential for improvement in vision over that possible with glasses or contact lenses

What is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) also referred to as surface ablation uses the excimer laser to reshape the cornea after the epithelial (surface) cells are removed . Like LASIK, PRK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. No flap is created during PRK therefore the reshaping of the cornea takes place at a more superficial level. In some patients, due to individual anatomic variations, PRK may be the procedure of choice for safety reasons. PRK patients typically have a longer recovery time and may experience more post-operative discomfort.

Am I A Candidate?

A detailed exam will determine whether you make a good candidate for laser vision correction. Generally, candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be in good general health
  • Have no conditions that affect the eyes
  • Have a stable prescription for at least one year

Are these Procedures FDA Approved?

Yes, LASIK and PRK and Custom LASIK/PRK have been approved by the FDA as safe and effective.
