Leaving Contacts in Overnight Can Cause Serious Issues

Contact lenses deprive the cornea of oxygen, lubrication, and nutrients, and leaving your contacts in overnight can cause a corneal infection. In the worst case scenarios, corneal infections can lead to loss of vision, so please remove your contact lens each night. If you should forget (we are human, it happens!) putting in a couple of drops of eye lubricant can help keep the lenses from sticking to your eyes.

Computer Vision Syndrome is Really a Thing

Our lives are controlled by the computer. We work on them all day and we play on them until late in the night and this can cause eyes to become dry, tired, and lead to blurry vision. Anyone who spends more than 2 hours a day in front of computer screen is at risk and should take precautions. Take frequent breaks and follow the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something that is at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Proper placement of your computer monitor can help, as well as using artificial teardrops. There are also supplements that can help prevent dryness; discuss with your optometrist what would work best for you.

The lutein & zeaxanthin found in leafy greens, egg yolks, and any fruit high in Vitamin C can help you avoid macular degeneration and cataracts. The vitamin E found in almonds can slow the progression of macular degeneration, and 1 ounce a day will provide you half the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin E. And finally, if you suffer from dry eye syndrome, the DHA found in fatty fish like salmon and trout can be your savior.

Health Issues Can Be Diagnosed Through Eye Exams

Diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorders, high cholesterol, thyroid disease and cancers can all be revealed through a comprehensive eye exam. Regular eye exams can also help determine health issues early; your optometrist will have a record to look back on at each exam, thereby noticing changes sooner. Scheduling regular eye exams can do more than just save your vision; it can save your life!
